What is dyslexia?

Dyslexia is a specific learning difficulty and a set of processing difficulties that mainly affects reading, writing and spelling. Those with dyslexia have difficulties in processing and remembering information that they see and hear. Weaknesses in working memory, orthographic skills and processing speed are often seen in those with dyslexia. As well as affecting literacy, children with dyslexia can struggle with reading comprehension, learning a language and mathematics.

Those with dyscalculia struggle to understand and achieve in maths. They have a real difficulty with understanding and working with numbers; counting, naming and ordering and estimating numbers. Children with dyscalculia cam also struggle with telling the time, using money and remembering procedures.
It is estimated that around 1 in 10 people in the UK have dyslexia whilst 1 in 20 have dyscalculia. Both dyslexia and dyscalculia frequently cooccur with other developmental difficulties. Each person will experience dyslexia and dyscalculia differently: every child is different with their own challenges, strengths and needs.
How are dyslexia and dyscalculia assessed?
If a child is having difficulties at school or in their day-to-day life, an assessment can provide a clearer picture of their cognitive profile and their strengths and challenges. A full diagnostic assessment can provide a diagnosis but also help the child, their family and their school better understand the child’s needs and ensure they receive the appropriate support. An assessment will always include psychometric testing as well as information gathered from children, parents and schools and from observations.
